British Bryological Society UK Catalogue of specimens

(Saesneg yn unig)

The British Bryological Society (BBS) exists to promote the study of mosses and liverworts. It maintains a herbarium (BBSUK) that holds bryophytes collected from around Britain by many well-known bryologists since around the beginning of the 20th century. This herbarium is one part of the extensive lower plant collections at Amgueddfa Cymru. Housed at Amgueddfa Cymru since 1969, it represents decades of collaboration between Amgueddfa Cymru and the BBS.

Additions to the BBSUK occur when voucher specimens, which expand the currently known distribution of a species, are sent in by bryologists to the BBS Recorders. Recorders verify the specimens, the distributions are updated and the specimens sent for incorporation into the BBSUK. Distributions are only revised if there is a verified voucher specimen to back them up. Details of the distribution of bryophyte species in the British Isles can be found in the BBS Census Catalogue (Hill et al. 2008). Most of the voucher specimens which relate to these records will be held in the BBSUK herbarium.

As the voucher specimens are received by Amgueddfa Cymru, they are documented and filed with the rest of the BBSUK collection. The data associated with the specimens is fully documented up to 2008 and is available via the link below. There are currently a total of 41,584 bryophyte specimens, 11,532 liverworts and 30,052 mosses in the BBSUK herbarium.

Further information on bryophytes can be found on the BBS website.
